(Sao Paulo, Brazil) In the middle of the fast growing information revolution, time seems to be flying in people’s life. GOAS - BOTANIC GARDEN TOUR - Brazil
On April 26th the Give Together Team (17 participants) took 35 children in need from the GOAS Institution for a tour at the Botanic Garden in Sao Paulo.
The objective of this tour was to offer them recreation since they live on a poor neighborhood where there is no infrastructure at all for them to enjoy their free time. At the same time, we wanted to teach them about social environmental responsibility.
Associação Raiar do Sol - Shelter for Elder People
On September15th, the employees from Sabre Brazil visited a very special place called - Associação Raiar do Sol. This is a shelter for elder people that accomodates 85 senior citizens who have no one to look after them, no house of their own and can not afford a place to live.
This private institution suffers with lack of money so, they are always counting on people’s help to maintain the elder people’s quality life. However, what these people need most is care and attention since most of them have no family and are homeless.
The team arrived at 2:00 PM to prepare an afternoon coffee break with cheese sandwiches, beverages and cake, enjoying the time talking and giving attention to them.
Rebeca, one of our colleagues, met Mr. Alberto, a 78 year old man who is blind and felt in love with him. She cut and polished his nails while talking about his favorite subjects: politics and soccer games.
How hard is to become children again!
FIRST STEP
Stablish direct contact in the streets between children/teenagers and the “Sarantañani” team
SECOND STEP
Approach to an alternative house, evaluation and detection of abilities and potentialities.
THIRD STEP
Look for a house and build the foundation for a community leaving inside of it.
FOURTH STEP
End of the process achieving a gradual independence of the teenager with the purpose of creating their own “personal live project” within a “Youth Residence”.
As an option for developing special abilities, they get technical instruction in different jobs as: carpentry, mechanical and others that will help them grow and gain economical independence.
Altarpiece
The creation of altarpieces is the mayor activity that stimulates their creativity.
They build:
- Wood Altarpieces on clients request
- Duplicates of historical facades, churches, monuments, etc.
A place where kindness, warmth and quality get together to create an atmosphere that establishes the difference in the market. All this in the hands of young people that belong to the project with a gastronomic education.
Several teenagers have already graduated from the project; they are now labor independent and can maintain their selves.
We decided to buy cleaning tools and painting to give a fresher and warm full look. With the help of the ICYE guys, we divided in groups to paint walls, wash floors and furniture, install and accommodate all the new things we brought: a desk with a computer, music equipment, a book shelf, board games, a table and new chairs.
There are not enough words to express the emotion we felt while helping and bringing joy to this kids. They were so involved in the initiative that they took the brushes and brooms to work together.
We spent the whole afternoon giving a little of our time and receiving a bunch of smiles. It was incredible to see the happiness that a little of music, a computer and some board games could bring. For some of them, it was the first time they had the opportunity to play chess, checkers, scrabble and others. We brought them good new reasons for sharing time together and keeping them away from the streets, away from all those bad habit they got since they were very little.

Rango de Jesus
On September 15th, 2006, we went to the Church Bom Jesus dos Passos to prepare a delicious dinner for the homeless – the project is called Rango de Jesus (literally Jesus´s Dinner) and it is been delivered to these people for 16 years. In the beginning, they served snacks every Friday night and on Saturdays at lunch, but fortunately the project has grown and now, with the help of volunteers like us, complete meals are served.
